Alaska Airlines is preparing for a major expansion of its international network, with plans to increase the number of long-haul destinations from Seattle to at least 15 by 2030. The airline is using its growing fleet, international partnerships and Seattle hub to build a stronger presence in the global aviation market. The strategy is expected to focus heavily on connections between the US West Coast, Europe and Asia.

Alaska Airlines currently operates long-haul flights from Seattle to destinations including Tokyo, Seoul, London, Rome and Reykjavik. The airline is also preparing to add Paris and Athens to its network in 2027. The expansion will strengthen Seattle’s role as Alaska Airlines’ main international gateway and allow the carrier to offer more options to passengers travelling between North America and major international markets.

Japan Airlines (JAL) is expected to play an important role in Alaska Airlines’ international strategy. Both airlines are members of the oneworld alliance, allowing passengers to connect between their networks.

The partnership gives Alaska Airlines access to a much wider network across Japan and Asia without requiring the carrier to operate flights to every destination itself. This could help Alaska expand its international reach while keeping its own long-haul network focused on key markets. Alaska Airlines’ acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in 2024 has also strengthened its international expansion plans. The deal brought additional widebody aircraft into the group, including Boeing 787 aircraft capable of operating long-distance international routes.

The airline is also investing in premium cabins, airport lounges and its loyalty programme as it looks to attract more international and business travellers. By 2030, Alaska Airlines expects international, premium, loyalty and cargo activities to represent a larger share of its overall business.

The expansion will also increase competition at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, particularly with Delta Air Lines, which has a major presence at the airport.

For Alaska Airlines, the goal is clear: use its strong West Coast network, international partnerships and growing widebody fleet to turn Seattle into a larger global connecting hub by the end of the decade.
