Delhi Airport News
Customs officials have arrested an Indian passenger at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport for allegedly smuggling precious stones and jewellery items worth around Rs 2 crore. The passenger had arrived in Delhi from Bangkok and was intercepted by Airport Customs officials at Terminal 3.
According to officials, the passenger was stopped on October 3 based on spot profiling after arriving from Bangkok. Customs officers then conducted a detailed examination of his baggage and a personal search.
During the search, officials recovered around 3,200 pieces of precious stones and jewellery items. The goods recovered during the initial airport search were valued at around Rs 1 crore.
The passenger allegedly admitted that he had brought the items from Bangkok to Delhi. Following the recovery, Customs officials carried out a search at the passenger’s premises as part of the investigation.
The search at the premises led to the recovery of a large quantity of precious stones and other related items. Officials found around 196.7 kg of rough emeralds, 221 carats of cut and polished rubies and 45 carats of cut and polished emeralds. Relevant documents and other items were also recovered during the search.
After taking into account the items recovered during the investigation, Customs officials said the total value of the seized goods was around Rs 2 crore.
The recovered precious stones and jewellery items have been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act. The passenger has also been arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962, on charges related to smuggling.
Customs authorities are now conducting further investigation into the case. Officials are expected to examine where the precious stones were sourced, their intended destination and whether other people were involved in bringing the goods into India.
The seizure highlights the checks carried out by Customs officials on passengers arriving from international destinations. Detailed baggage examinations and passenger profiling can help authorities detect attempts to bring valuable goods into the country without following the required customs procedures.
