Pune Airport News: Old Terminal Renovation Complete, Passenger Capacity to Rise

The renovation of the old terminal building at Pune Airport has been completed, bringing expanded passenger facilities and modern infrastructure to the airport. The upgraded terminal is expected to help manage the growing number of passengers and reduce crowding during busy hours.
The renovated area is expected to increase Pune Airport’s passenger handling capacity by around 405 passengers per hour. This additional capacity could help improve the movement of passengers during check-in, security checks and boarding.
Most of the required procedures for opening the renovated facility have already been completed. The only remaining step is the final approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Once the permission is received, the expanded terminal area will be opened for passengers.
The renovation has focused on increasing the available space for important passenger processes. The upgraded facility covers around 4,075 square metres.
The renovated area includes the check-in area, pre-embarkation security check (PESC) and security hold area (SHA). These facilities have been expanded to handle more passengers and improve the overall airport experience.
A total of 14 check-in counters have been added in the expanded check-in area. The renovation has also created two new boarding gates, 6A and 6B, providing additional space for passenger boarding.
The renovation has been carried out in response to increasing passenger numbers at Pune Airport. Crowding during peak hours has been a major concern, particularly around check-in and security areas.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the rise in passenger traffic has made it important to improve facilities and reduce congestion. He said the renovation work has been completed and the old terminal will soon return to service in a modern and improved form after receiving the required BCAS clearance.
The additional passenger handling capacity is expected to make airport operations smoother, especially during periods of heavy traffic.
The upgraded old terminal is expected to complement the airport’s existing infrastructure. By making use of the old terminal building and expanding key facilities, authorities aim to provide additional capacity without waiting for a completely new terminal project.
Once opened, the renovated facility will give passengers more check-in counters, additional boarding gates and larger security areas. This could reduce waiting times and improve the flow of passengers through the terminal.
Although construction and most procedural work have been completed, the facility cannot be opened for public use until the final BCAS permission is received.
After the approval, the renovated terminal is expected to become operational and add significant capacity to Pune Airport.
