A tragic training aircraft crash in Kanpur on Thursday, August 27, 2026, claimed the lives of two pilots. A twin-engine, four-seater training aircraft crashed in a field near the banks of the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the police, both people on board the aircraft died in the accident. One of them was a trainee pilot, while the other was an experienced instructor.
The aircraft had taken off from the Garg Aviation training centre in Kanpur at around 11:30 am. The flight was reportedly returning to the training centre when the accident occurred around 11:50 am.
The pilots were identified as Sachin Bhatia from Gujarat and Abhishek Pujari from Karnataka. Police officials said that one of the pilots was an instructor who had around 3,000 hours of flying experience.
The aircraft reportedly lost control before crashing into a field. The exact reason behind the accident has not yet been established.
Emergency teams and local authorities immediately reached the crash site after receiving information about the incident.
Visuals from the location showed that the training aircraft was badly damaged. Several parts of the aircraft were found broken and twisted across the grassy and wooded area. The wings and other sections of the aircraft were also damaged in the crash.
Police officials secured the area following the accident to support the investigation and ensure that evidence from the crash site remained protected.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed about the accident. A DGCA team is expected to visit the site as part of the regulatory investigation.
Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said that authorities had protected the crash site and that the DGCA team would conduct a detailed investigation.
The investigation will focus on finding out why the aircraft lost control and whether technical, operational, weather-related or other factors played a role in the crash.
Officials also said that the training aircraft had been brought to the aviation training centre in 2023.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences following the deaths of the two pilots. He prayed for the peace of the departed souls and expressed his sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones.
The accident has brought attention to the risks involved in flight training and the importance of maintaining strict aviation safety standards.
