Trichy International Airport has started domestic air cargo operations from its new integrated passenger terminal, opening a new opportunity for businesses in the region. The new facility began operations on Tuesday and handled around 2.4 tonnes of domestic freight on its first day.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is also planning to work with different stakeholders to promote the new cargo facility and encourage more businesses to use air transport.
The first domestic cargo shipment from the facility weighed around 1,192 kg. It was loaded onto an IndiGo flight operating from Trichy to Hyderabad.
The launch-day cargo movement was considered a positive response by airport officials. They believe that growing demand could encourage airlines to increase their domestic cargo capacity and could also attract more carriers to operate additional flights from Trichy.
The new cargo facility has been welcomed by the region’s trade and business community, which has been seeking domestic air cargo services for a long time.
Trichy Airport is already connected to major domestic cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. These cities can serve as important transit hubs for cargo moving from Trichy to other parts of India.

AAI is also considering using the older integrated terminal building for both domestic and export cargo operations.
