A 55-year-old man was detained at Mumbai airport after allegedly making a joke about having a bomb in his bag while preparing to board a flight to Delhi. The incident caused panic at the airport and temporarily disrupted the IndiGo flight, officials said.
The incident took place on Sunday at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The passenger, identified as Anuj Jayram Suvarna, was travelling to Delhi.
According to officials, airline security staff were checking passengers and their hand luggage at the boarding gate. During the routine check, staff asked passengers whether their bags contained prohibited items such as matches, lighters, scissors or liquids.
During this process, Suvarna allegedly made a casual remark that there was a “bomb” in his bag.
Although the passenger later claimed that he had made the statement as a joke, airport security personnel immediately treated the remark seriously.
Airline staff alerted their senior officials and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. The passenger was removed from the flight and detained.
The passenger was handed over to the Sahar police following a complaint from airline security officials. Police questioned him about the statement and investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident.
