A 36-year-old woman from Chennai has approached the police after alleging that jewellery worth around ₹1 lakh was stolen from her luggage during her journey from Mumbai to Chennai. The alleged theft is linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai.
The incident reportedly took place on July 29, when the woman, identified as Hajira Abutahir, reached Terminal 2 of Mumbai airport to board her flight to Chennai.
According to the complaint, Abutahir reached CSMIA’s Terminal 2 in Andheri East at around 7 pm. At approximately 8.40 pm, she handed over her grey suitcase and a black bag at the airline’s check-in counter.
She said she had packed several jewellery items inside her luggage. A necklace, two pairs of earrings and a ring were kept in one plastic box, while silver anklets were stored separately. The jewellery boxes were placed inside a black sack within her luggage.
The total value of the jewellery was estimated at around ₹1 lakh. Abutahir travelled to Chennai and reached the airport at around 1.45 am on July 30. She collected her luggage and returned home. It was only after checking the contents of her bags that she reportedly noticed that some jewellery was missing.
The missing items included two gold earrings, one ring and silver anklets, according to her complaint. After discovering that the jewellery was missing, Abutahir reportedly returned to Chennai airport the following day. She checked CCTV footage there to determine whether her luggage had been tampered with after arriving in Chennai.
However, she reportedly did not find evidence of tampering at Chennai airport. Following this, she suspected that the jewellery may have been taken while her luggage was being handled at Mumbai airport. She subsequently approached the Sahar police and filed a complaint against an unidentified person.
The Sahar police have registered a theft case and started an investigation. Police officials are examining CCTV footage from the airport to determine who may have accessed or handled the luggage during the check-in process.
An officer from Sahar police station said investigators are scanning CCTV recordings to identify the person responsible for the alleged theft. At present, no suspect has been identified in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
Abutahir had travelled from Chennai to Mumbai on July 18 and was staying at her maternal home during her visit. Her brother reportedly lives in Dharavi, while her husband works at a private electrician’s shop in Chennai.
The alleged theft has raised concerns about the safety of valuable items kept inside checked-in luggage. The police investigation and CCTV examination are expected to help establish when and where the jewellery went missing and identify the person responsible, if the theft allegation is confirmed.
