Ahmedabad Airport Metro Connectivity Gets Cabinet Approval Before CWG 2030

The Union Cabinet has approved a major metro rail expansion project in Ahmedabad to improve connectivity ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2030. The decision was announced on June 10, 2026, as part of India’s preparations to strengthen urban transport infrastructure for the global sporting event.
The approved project is the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2A, which will extend metro connectivity to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of around ₹2,169 crore and is expected to significantly improve transport efficiency in the city.
According to the plan, the new metro corridor will cover a distance of about 6 kilometres. It will include four elevated stations and one underground station, making it a mixed structure project designed to suit the city’s urban landscape. The construction is expected to be completed within four years.
Once completed, the metro extension will provide direct and faster connectivity between key locations such as Ahmedabad city, Gandhinagar, GIFT City, and the airport. This is expected to make travel easier for passengers, business travellers, and international visitors.
The project will also expand the total metro network in Ahmedabad to approximately 78 kilometres. Officials believe this expansion will play a major role in handling increased passenger traffic during the Commonwealth Games and in the years beyond.
The metro link will be particularly important for transporting athletes, officials, and tourists during the games. It will help reduce road congestion and ensure faster movement between important venues, hotels, and transport hubs.
The corridor is also designed to be integrated with other major transport systems. These include Indian Railways, the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, and the city’s bus transport networks. This integrated approach aims to create a seamless public transport system for Ahmedabad and surrounding regions.
The project will pass through several important residential and commercial areas, including Sardar Nagar, Koteshwar, Bhat, and the Sabarmati Riverfront region. These areas are expected to benefit from improved accessibility and reduced travel time.
Officials also highlighted that the metro expansion is expected to generate employment for around 2,500 people during its construction phase. In addition, it is likely to boost urban development in nearby areas, especially around planned sports facilities and infrastructure being developed for the Commonwealth Games.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the Cabinet approval during a briefing in New Delhi. He said the project reflects the government’s focus on developing modern and efficient public transport systems in major cities.
The government believes that this metro extension will not only support the Commonwealth Games but will also provide long-term benefits for Ahmedabad’s growing population. Better airport connectivity is expected to improve tourism, business travel, and overall urban mobility in the region.
With this approval, Ahmedabad moves a step closer to becoming a more connected and globally prepared city ahead of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
