Customs officials at Trichy International Airport arrested a 58-year-old man on Monday after allegedly detecting gold worth around ₹53.7 lakh concealed in his underwear. The passenger, a native of Trichy, had arrived at the airport from Singapore in the early hours of the day.
According to officials, the passenger came under scrutiny after his behaviour appeared suspicious during the customs inspection. A subsequent examination led authorities to discover gold concealed inside his underwear. The precious metal had reportedly been stitched into the garment in an attempt to evade detection.
Officials said they recovered 347 grams of gold in paste form from the passenger. In addition to the concealed gold, a gold bangle was also seized from his possession. The total value of the gold recovered was estimated at approximately ₹53.7 lakh.
The passenger was taken into custody following the seizure and was subsequently arrested by customs authorities. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged smuggling attempt, including whether the passenger was acting on behalf of a larger network.
Gold smuggling through international airports remains a concern for customs authorities, particularly on routes connecting India with countries where gold prices and import-related regulations can create incentives for illegal movement of the precious metal. Passengers attempting to avoid customs checks often resort to concealing gold in clothing, baggage or other personal belongings.
In this case, the unusual concealment method did not prevent customs officials from detecting the gold. The passenger’s suspicious behaviour prompted further inspection, which ultimately resulted in the recovery.
