An Air India Express flight travelling from Dammam in Saudi Arabia to New Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad on Monday after a crew member discovered a threatening message referring to a bomb inside the aircraft’s lavatory.
The flight, which was carrying 32 passengers, landed safely at Ahmedabad Airport as a precautionary measure following the discovery. According to Ahmedabad Police, the message was written on a piece of tissue paper found inside the aircraft’s toilet. The word “bomb” on the note immediately triggered security concerns and led the crew and authorities to activate established emergency procedures.
Following the diversion, all passengers were safely deboarded at Terminal 2 of Ahmedabad Airport. Security agencies subsequently began a detailed inspection of the aircraft to determine whether there was any actual explosive device or other suspicious material onboard.
Air India Express said the government-appointed Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was informed immediately after the threat was received. The airline said all prescribed security procedures were initiated and the aircraft landed safely in Ahmedabad.
The airline also indicated that the aircraft would only be cleared to return to service after the necessary security checks had been completed.
The incident caused a temporary disruption to the flight’s scheduled journey to Delhi, but there were no reports of injuries among passengers or crew. Security personnel continued their examination of the aircraft as part of the precautionary response.
Such threats are treated seriously by aviation authorities even when the information later turns out to be false. A written threat discovered inside an aircraft can trigger a comprehensive security response, including diversion, passenger evacuation and inspection of the aircraft and baggage.
