Parandur Airport News: Tamil Nadu Has Not Yet Asked Centre to Change Chennai’s Second Airport Site

The Central Government has clarified that it has not received any request from the Tamil Nadu government to change the location of Chennai’s proposed second airport from Parandur. The statement was made by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol during a Rajya Sabha session in response to a question raised by DMK MP P. Wilson.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has not received any formal proposal seeking to relocate the airport project. As a result, Parandur continues to remain the officially approved site for Chennai’s second airport.
Mohol informed Parliament that the Ministry granted in-principle approval for the airport project to the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in April 2025. TIDCO had submitted its proposal for the project in September 2024.
The Minister also revealed that the estimated investment for Phase I of the proposed airport is around ₹10,500 crore, according to TIDCO’s application.
The proposed Parandur airport is expected to ease congestion at the existing Chennai International Airport, which continues to witness rising passenger traffic. The new airport is also expected to improve regional connectivity, strengthen cargo operations, support tourism, and attract fresh investments to Tamil Nadu.
However, the project has faced opposition from some local residents, farmers, and environmental groups over concerns related to land acquisition, displacement, and the impact on agricultural land and nearby water bodies.
Recent reports have suggested that the Tamil Nadu government could consider an alternative location for the airport. However, the Centre has clarified that no official request has been submitted to change the project site.
If the state government decides to shift the airport, it will need to submit a fresh proposal, which would require new feasibility studies, environmental assessments, land identification, and regulatory approvals. Until then, Parandur remains the proposed location for Chennai’s second airport.
