Mumbai Airport Customs officials have arrested a man after allegedly recovering more than 12.7 kg of suspected hydroponic cannabis from his baggage at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The passenger had arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok and was intercepted after crossing immigration.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Aman Dosani, a resident of Mumbra in Thane. According to Customs officials, the passenger was identified through Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) profiling and was stopped by officers of the Air Intelligence Unit for further examination.
Dosani had travelled from Bangkok to Mumbai. After he completed immigration formalities, Customs officials intercepted him and checked his trolley bag.
During the baggage examination, officers allegedly found 13 packets containing greenish-brown flowering and fruiting tops of a substance suspected to be hydroponic cannabis. The total weight of the recovered material was approximately 12,734 grams, or 12.7 kg.
The suspected contraband was seized by the Customs department under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
During questioning, Dosani reportedly told Customs officials that he was unaware of what was inside the bag. He claimed that the bag had been handed over to him by a person identified as Mr. Pandey in Bangkok.
According to the passenger’s statement, he had been asked to carry the bag to India and deliver it to another person in Mumbai. Dosani reportedly said he did not know the identity of the person who was supposed to receive the bag.
However, Customs officials said the preliminary investigation indicates the passenger’s possible involvement in the alleged illegal import of cannabis into India.
Customs officials have also taken possession of Dosani’s passport and boarding pass related to his Bangkok-Mumbai journey. He was subsequently arrested under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
The investigation is continuing to determine whether other people were involved in the alleged smuggling operation. Officials are also looking into the role of the person identified as Pandey and other possible associates.
Authorities said the preliminary findings suggest that more people may be connected to the case and efforts are underway to identify and trace them.
The incident highlights the continued efforts by Mumbai Airport Customs and security agencies to detect suspected drug smuggling through international passenger routes. Further investigation will determine the exact nature of the seized substance and the roles of those allegedly involved in the case.
