In a major action against illegal wildlife trade, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata seized 707 live Red-eared Slider turtles from an Indian passenger. The passenger was intercepted by customs officials after arriving at the airport, and authorities suspect a possible connection with a wildlife smuggling network.
The incident took place on July 22, when the passenger arrived in Kolkata on IndiGo flight 6E-1058. Based on intelligence inputs, Customs officials kept a close watch on the passenger and intercepted him after he crossed the Green Channel area.
During a detailed inspection of the passenger’s checked-in baggage, officials discovered hundreds of live turtles hidden inside the luggage. A total of 707 Red-eared Slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) were recovered from the baggage.
According to Customs officials, the passenger failed to provide any valid documents, licences, or permits required for importing or possessing the exotic turtles. Due to the lack of necessary paperwork, the animals were seized immediately.
The Red-eared Slider turtle is an exotic species that is popular in the international pet trade. However, uncontrolled movement and release of such non-native species can create environmental concerns as they may affect local ecosystems. Authorities closely monitor the illegal transportation of exotic animals to prevent wildlife-related crimes.
