A 23-year-old cab driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting an IndiGo cabin crew member while taking her to Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport in Hyderabad. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of airline employees, especially those travelling during late-night and early-morning shifts.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Errapogu Prashanth, a resident of Shamshabad Mandal in Telangana’s Rangareddy district. He was arrested after the victim filed a complaint with the airport police.
Police said the incident occurred when the IndiGo employee was travelling in a cab assigned for her official commute to the airport for her night shift. During the journey, the driver allegedly diverted the vehicle from its usual route and drove towards an isolated under-construction area near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. According to the complaint, the driver stopped the vehicle and reportedly told the woman that he needed to use the washroom. Police allege that he then attempted to sexually assault her.
The woman reportedly resisted the alleged assault and managed to escape from the location. After she escaped, the accused allegedly fled from the scene. The victim later reached the Airport Outpost Police Station in Shamshabad and lodged a formal complaint describing the incident. Based on her statement, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Police registered a criminal case and immediately launched an investigation.
Investigators traced the accused soon after receiving the complaint. The cab driver, Errapogu Prashanth, was arrested and produced before a magistrate. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody while the investigation continues. Police stated that the case has been registered on charges related to the alleged sexual assault of the airline employee during her transportation to the airport.
Officials are continuing to collect evidence, question witnesses, and examine other details connected to the incident.
