As many as 15 flights bound for Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) were diverted on Monday, August 24, after heavy rain and thunderstorms affected the national capital. The bad weather created difficult flying conditions and disrupted flight operations at one of India’s busiest airports.
According to the available information, 12 flights were diverted to Jaipur, while two flights were redirected to Chandigarh and one flight was sent to Lucknow. Of the 12 flights diverted to Jaipur, three were international flights.Delhi experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Monday, with several parts of the city receiving intense showers. The weather conditions affected normal flight operations and led to the diversion of flights that were scheduled to land at Delhi airport.
The weather disruption also affected road traffic across the capital. Heavy rainfall resulted in waterlogging at several locations and caused traffic congestion on major roads.
Authorities and passengers at Delhi airport were advised to keep track of their flight status and allow extra time for travel because of the weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall in parts of Delhi. A yellow alert was issued for other areas where moderate showers were expected.
South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi experienced heavy rainfall during the day.
The weather conditions also affected neighbouring areas. An orange alert was issued for Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad until at least 2 PM on Monday, while Ghaziabad was placed under a yellow alert.
The IMD forecast multiple spells of rain for Delhi on Monday. However, weather conditions are expected to improve from Tuesday, with little or no rainfall predicted across most parts of the capital for the rest of the week.
On Tuesday, very light rain may occur during the afternoon. On Wednesday, very light to light rainfall is expected in some areas before noon, followed by another spell from afternoon to evening. Moderate rain could occur at isolated locations.
From Thursday through Sunday, the IMD does not expect significant rainfall, although partly cloudy skies may continue.
The diversion of 15 flights highlights the impact that severe weather can have on airport operations. Thunderstorms, heavy rain and poor flying conditions can make it difficult for aircraft to land safely, forcing airlines and airport authorities to divert flights to alternative airports.
