Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru and Vancouver International Airport in Canada signed a sister airport agreement on Friday. The deal aims to strengthen operational, technological, economic and air service links between southern India and western Canada, officials said.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, and other dignitaries.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) lists seven areas where the two airports will work together. One key area is the use of technology and innovation to improve airport operations.

The partnership will include work on Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR) Digital Twin. A digital twin is a virtual copy of an airport that helps staff study operations and plan improvements. The two airports will also explore new tools and possible pilot projects. These could be developed or tested jointly by the YVR and Bengaluru airport teams.

According to a statement from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates Kempegowda International Airport, the agreement also aims to make air cargo movement easier between southern India and Canada. This is meant to support growing industries such as the technology sector in both regions.

The agreement also sets out the goal of starting direct air services between Bengaluru and Vancouver. At present, no timeline has been shared for such flights, so this remains an aim and not a confirmed plan.

A sister airport agreement is a partnership between two airports in different countries. They share ideas, technology and best practices, and they work together to improve connections between their cities. Such deals do not always lead to new flights, but they create a base for cooperation.

If direct flights begin in future, travellers between Bengaluru and Vancouver could save time and avoid long layovers. Businesses in the technology sector could also benefit from faster cargo and stronger ties. For now, passengers should wait for official announcements from the airports and airlines.
