UP Cabinet Approves Proposal to Rename Jewar Airport After PM Modi

Noida Airport News

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision after a Cabinet meeting on October 9, 2026.

According to the Chief Minister, the proposal recognises Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contribution to the development of Uttar Pradesh. The Cabinet also passed a resolution acknowledging Modi’s 25 years of continuous service as head of government. This began with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001.

Although the state Cabinet has approved the proposal, the airport has not been renamed yet. The formal process is subject to the applicable central-government procedure. This means the decision is a state-level recommendation and does not confirm that the new name has taken effect.

Noida International Airport is being developed as the second international airport for the National Capital Region, alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is expected to add passenger-handling capacity and improve air connectivity for Noida, Greater Noida and the wider western Uttar Pradesh region.

Its location in Jewar places it within a growth corridor linked to urban expansion, commercial activity and infrastructure development. The airport’s long-term role will depend on the growth of flight services, passenger demand and links with nearby business and tourism centres.

The airport was inaugurated in March 2026 and began commercial operations in June, according to published reports. As operations grow, more airline services and rising passenger traffic will decide how much the airport contributes to regional aviation.

The proposed renaming is a separate administrative step from the airport’s development and expansion. Its impact will depend on how the formal name-change process moves forward, along with continued development of airport services and regional connectivity. Until the central-government process is complete, the airport will continue to be known by its current name, Noida International Airport.
