Three flights heading to Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar were diverted on Sunday night after reports of drone activity near a village in the Rajasansi area. The incident took place at around 9 pm.

The three flights were Air India AI-855 from Delhi, IndiGo 6E-5028 from Mumbai and Malaysia Airlines MH-118 from Kuala Lumpur. None of them could land in Amritsar as planned.

The Air India flight from Delhi was sent back to the national capital. The IndiGo flight from Mumbai was diverted to Chandigarh. The Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur was diverted to Delhi.

A Chandigarh airport manager confirmed that IndiGo flight 6E-5028 was diverted to the city. The aircraft landed in Chandigarh at around 10.30 pm. It departed for Amritsar at 11.25 pm, so passengers reached their destination very late on Sunday night.

Authorities in Amritsar are investigating the reported drone activity and the circumstances that led to the diversions. Details about who was flying the drone, or what it was doing near the village, have not been shared so far.

Drones flying close to an airport can be a serious risk to aircraft, especially during landing and take-off, when planes fly low and have little room to change course. For this reason, pilots and air traffic controllers do not take chances when a drone is reported nearby. Diverting flights to another airport is a common safety step in such situations.

Passengers travelling to or from Amritsar should check their flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport. More details are expected once the authorities make progress in their investigation.
