An IndiGo flight from Varanasi to Mumbai was delayed by around three and a half hours on Thursday after the pilot scheduled to operate the flight suddenly reported sick. The airline then made alternative arrangements to operate the service.

The affected flight was IndiGo 6E-6544, which was scheduled to depart from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi for Mumbai. The unexpected illness of the scheduled pilot led to a delay in the flight’s departure.

According to the airline, a replacement pilot was arranged from Ahmedabad to operate the flight. The aircraft was eventually able to depart for Mumbai after the necessary arrangements were completed.

The flight faced a delay of approximately three and a half hours, causing inconvenience to passengers travelling from Varanasi to Mumbai.

The delay was caused by the sudden unavailability of the pilot who had been scheduled to operate the service. As the airline needed to arrange another qualified pilot, passengers had to wait at the airport.

IndiGo made arrangements for a replacement crew member so that the flight could operate safely. The airline’s priority was to ensure that all required operational and safety procedures were followed before the aircraft departed.

While the airline attributed the delay to the pilot falling sick, Varanasi airport director Puneet Gupta said the flight had been delayed due to technical reasons.

He also rejected reports that passengers had created a disturbance at the airport because of the delay. According to the airport authorities, there was no passenger ruckus related to the incident.

The difference in the explanations highlights the circumstances surrounding the delay, but the flight was ultimately operated to Mumbai after the issue was resolved.

With the scheduled pilot unavailable, IndiGo arranged for another pilot to operate the service. The replacement pilot was brought in from Ahmedabad.

Airlines have strict requirements regarding crew availability and qualifications, and a flight cannot operate without the required flight crew. Therefore, arranging another pilot can take time, particularly when a crew member becomes unavailable at short notice.

In this case, IndiGo completed the necessary arrangements before allowing flight 6E-6544 to continue its journey.

Despite the long delay, the Mumbai-bound flight was eventually operated from Varanasi to Mumbai. The disruption was therefore limited to the delay in departure rather than cancellation of the service.

The incident shows how an unexpected crew-related issue can affect flight schedules. Airlines must arrange qualified replacement crew members and complete all required procedures before an aircraft can depart.

For the passengers on IndiGo 6E-6544, the three-and-a-half-hour delay caused inconvenience, but the flight ultimately continued to its destination after the replacement pilot was arranged.
