The Tamil Nadu government is considering a major expansion of Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam after deciding to drop the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur. The move is aimed at increasing Chennai’s airport capacity and meeting the growing demand for air travel in the city.
The government is examining the possibility of adding a fifth terminal at the existing airport along with expanding other supporting infrastructure. If the plan moves forward, the annual passenger-handling capacity of Chennai airport could increase from around 3 crore passengers to approximately 5.5 crore passengers.
The proposal comes shortly after the state government abandoned the Parandur airport project, which was planned as a second airport for Chennai. The Parandur project was estimated to cost around Rs 27,000 crore and was planned across nearly 5,746 acres in Kancheepuram district.
The proposed greenfield airport faced strong opposition from farmers and local residents. Concerns were mainly related to land acquisition and the possible impact on agricultural land. Following these concerns, the government decided to look at other ways to meet Chennai’s future aviation needs.
The proposed expansion of Meenambakkam airport is expected to provide an immediate solution to Chennai’s growing passenger traffic. A new terminal could provide additional space for passengers and help the airport handle more domestic and international flights.
Along with terminal expansion, the government is also examining improvements to road connectivity around the airport. A new access route through Polichalur and Tharapakkam has been recommended. Better connectivity to the Tambaram-Maduravoyal bypass is also being considered.
These road improvements could help reduce traffic congestion on existing routes leading to Chennai airport. Better access would also make it easier for passengers from different parts of the city and surrounding areas to reach the airport.
While Meenambakkam is being considered for expansion, the Tamil Nadu government has not completely ruled out the need for another airport in the Chennai region in the long term.
Alternative locations, including Cheyyur and Gummidipoondi, are reportedly being considered for a future greenfield airport. The government may study these locations before making a final decision.
The expansion of Meenambakkam is therefore being viewed as a short- and medium-term measure to increase Chennai’s aviation capacity. At the same time, finding a suitable location for a new airport could help address the city’s long-term requirements.
As Chennai’s passenger traffic continues to grow, increasing airport capacity has become an important infrastructure priority. The proposed Meenambakkam expansion could help the city handle rising demand while the government continues to explore options for a future airport with less impact on agricultural land.
