The government has revived a plan to clear slum settlements around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai. The move could help create more space for airport expansion, while the authorities are also considering in-situ rehabilitation for people living in the affected areas.
According to the available information, the airport operator, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), could potentially expand the airport’s capacity and infrastructure if the settlements around its boundary are cleared. The proposal has gained fresh attention as the airport is preparing for changes related to the redevelopment and demolition of Terminal 1.
The land surrounding Mumbai airport is owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Parts of this land have been leased to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the airport operator.
Over several decades, slum settlements have developed and expanded on portions of the AAI-owned land. The settlements are estimated to occupy around 275 acres.
Earlier efforts to clear the settlements faced several challenges. The process involved issues related to rehabilitation, land availability and the relocation of residents. As a result, previous plans did not make significant progress.
The government is now looking at a fresh approach to address the issue.
One of the key proposals under consideration is in-situ rehabilitation. Under this approach, eligible residents would be rehabilitated within or close to the same area instead of being moved far away.
Such a plan could help address concerns of residents while also allowing authorities to free up land needed for airport-related development.
The rehabilitation process would require proper identification of eligible families, planning of housing and coordination between different government agencies and stakeholders.
Clearing the encroached land could provide MIAL with additional space around the airport. The airport operator could potentially use the recovered land for infrastructure and operational improvements.
Mumbai airport operates in a highly congested urban environment, where availability of land is limited. Any additional space could therefore be important for future expansion.
