Air India and Saudi Arabia’s new national airline, Riyadh Air, have announced a strategic partnership that is expected to make travel easier for passengers flying between India, Saudi Arabia, and many international destinations. The agreement marks an important step toward improving air connectivity and offering travelers more convenient flight options.
The two airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which lays the foundation for future cooperation through codeshare and interline agreements. Once the required regulatory approvals are received, passengers will be able to book journeys across both airline networks using a single ticket, making international travel smoother and more efficient.
A codeshare agreement allows two airlines to sell seats on each other’s flights. For example, a passenger booking with Air India may also travel on a Riyadh Air-operated flight without having to make separate reservations. This arrangement helps travelers enjoy easier transfers, coordinated schedules, and a more seamless travel experience. An interline agreement works in a similar way by allowing passengers to check in once and have their baggage transferred automatically to connecting flights, even if different airlines operate the journey.
The partnership is expected to strengthen air links between two countries that already share strong economic and cultural ties. Every year, millions of Indians travel to Saudi Arabia for work, business, tourism, education, and family visits. Religious travel, including journeys for Hajj and Umrah, also contributes significantly to passenger traffic between the two nations.
By combining the strengths of their major hubs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Riyadh, Air India and Riyadh Air aim to provide passengers with better access to destinations across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. Travelers may benefit from shorter connection times and a wider choice of routes, making international journeys more convenient.
