Laos Airport

An Indian solo traveller has gone viral on social media after sharing what she described as a “traumatising” experience during her trip from Laos to Cambodia. The traveller, Annapurna, claimed she was almost denied boarding at an airport in Laos because she could not immediately show 400 US dollars in cash.

The incident reportedly happened at Luang Prabang Airport in Laos while Annapurna was preparing to board her flight to Cambodia. According to her Instagram video, airline staff repeatedly asked her to show 400 US dollars in cash before allowing her to board the flight.

Annapurna said she tried to explain that she had enough money in her bank account and even showed her bank statements, travel history, and other supporting documents. She also told the staff that she had already entered Cambodia just two weeks earlier without facing any issues.

The traveller explained that during her earlier trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap, Cambodian authorities had allowed her to pay for her visa on arrival using a card. Because of this previous experience, she was surprised by the sudden demand for cash at the Laos airport.

In her first viral video, Annapurna expressed frustration over what she felt was unfair treatment toward Indian tourists in some Southeast Asian countries. She questioned why Indian travellers are often treated differently compared to Western tourists.

She alleged that Indian tourists are sometimes overcharged for services such as tuk-tuks, shopping, and local transportation. According to her, despite paying similar prices as foreign tourists from Western countries, Indians are not always given the same level of respect and welcome.

Her comments quickly gained attention online, with many social media users supporting her and sharing their own travel experiences. Several users discussed the challenges faced by Indian passport holders while travelling internationally, especially in countries where additional checks and documentation are sometimes requested.

However, Annapurna later posted a clarification video to explain that the issue was not caused by immigration authorities. Instead, she blamed the airline staff for the confusion and stressful experience.

Tagging Vietnam Airlines in her post, she wrote that the airline was “solely responsible” for the incident. She also criticised the staff for not providing any official written explanation regarding the cash requirement.

According to her, airline employees referred only to internal instructions and informal communication instead of showing a proper government rule or official notice. She argued that if such a requirement truly existed, airlines and immigration authorities should clearly communicate it to travellers in advance.

The traveller also mentioned another difficult experience during her journey. She recalled facing strict checks while crossing from Cambodia into Laos by land, where officials reportedly asked her to provide proof of an onward ticket before allowing entry.

The incident has now sparked a wider debate online about the treatment of Indian tourists abroad. Many people believe that Indian travellers often face stricter scrutiny compared to tourists from Western countries, while others pointed out that airlines sometimes follow specific travel guidelines based on destination requirements.
