Noida International Airport has started its commercial operations, but its early growth has been slower than expected. The airport, located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, began commercial operations on June 15, 2026. According to the operator, geopolitical tensions and changes in international aviation networks have affected the pace of its initial expansion.
Despite the slow start, passenger and flight numbers increased significantly between June and July. In the first 15 days of June, the airport handled 204 flight movements and around 25,000 passengers. In July, activity increased to 1,044 flight movements and 77,204 passengers.
The rise in traffic shows that the airport is gradually building its passenger base. However, operator Zurich Airport International AG expects the ramp-up to remain slower in the near term because of uncertainty in the global aviation environment.
The airport began operations at a time when international aviation was facing several challenges. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, have affected airline schedules and international flight networks.
The closure of Pakistani airspace has also created difficulties for airlines operating routes between India and destinations to the west. These developments have made it more difficult for airlines to quickly introduce or expand some international services from Noida International Airport.
At present, the airport is connected to 17 domestic routes operated by IndiGo and Akasa Air. More domestic destinations are expected to be added as passenger demand grows.
Air India Express had also proposed operations from Noida airport, but those services have not started yet. The operator continues to expect international connectivity as part of the airport’s long-term development.
The slow initial passenger growth has also resulted in a financial loss during the airport’s early operating period.
According to Zurich Airport’s investment presentation, Noida International Airport generated revenue of around 2.5 million Swiss francs, or approximately ₹29.5 crore, during the first half of 2026. However, operating expenses reached around 4.9 million Swiss francs, equivalent to about ₹57.9 crore.
As a result, the airport recorded a loss of approximately 2.4 million Swiss francs, or around ₹28.3 crore, before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.
Such losses can occur during the initial stage of a large airport project because passenger traffic and airline operations generally take time to build up.
Noida International Airport has an initial annual passenger-handling capacity of around 1.2 crore passengers. The airport is planned to expand significantly in the future, with the wider master plan targeting capacity of more than 70 million passengers.
The operator remains confident about the long-term potential of the airport and the Indian aviation market. It is working with airline partners to gradually increase domestic connectivity and introduce international services.
The airport is also expected to support economic activity in Jewar and surrounding areas. Growth in passenger traffic could create opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport services, logistics companies and other businesses.
While the early financial results show pressure and the initial growth has been slower than expected, the airport’s increasing passenger numbers suggest that operations are gradually gaining momentum. The coming months will be important as airlines add more routes and the airport works towards its long-term goal of becoming a major aviation hub for Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.
