Gulfstream G500: Speed, Sophistication, and a Leap Forward in Business Aviation

Gulfstream G500

Introduced as part of Gulfstream Aerospace’s ambitious initiative to redefine the future of private air travel, the Gulfstream G500 combines next-generation technology with best-in-class performance and an unmatched passenger experience. The aircraft entered service in 2018 as a clean-sheet design, purpose-built to meet the evolving expectations of corporate leaders, high-net-worth individuals, and government officials who seek range, speed, connectivity, and comfort in equal measure.

As Gulfstream has made sustainability a key pillar of the G500 program, the aircraft is capable of operating with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and has demonstrated multiple transatlantic flights powered entirely by SAF. The aircraft also benefits from predictive maintenance tools, reducing unscheduled downtime and improving fleet readiness. Other benefits include the PlaneConnect™ health monitoring system, which streams real-time aircraft data to ground crews and Gulfstream’s operations centre, helping to diagnose and resolve issues before they become disruptive. Furthermore, aircraft’s use of advanced composite materials and simplified systems architecture reduces scheduled maintenance intervals.

Cabin Experience

The aircraft’s cabin balances opulence with functionality. It measures 41 feet 6 inches in usable length, 7 feet 7 inches in width, and 6 feet 2 inches in height, spacious enough to accommodate up to 19 passengers in a layout that can be configured to suit a variety of travel missions—from executive boardrooms in the sky to luxurious private residences. The aircraft boasts up to three distinct living zones, which may include a club seating area, a dining or conference zone, and a private stateroom or aft lounge, depending on client requirements.

Other notable features include 100 per cent fresh air replenished every two to three minutes and a cabin altitude of just 4,850 feet while cruising at 51,000 feet, which significantly reduce fatigue on long-haul journeys. The aircraft’s   fourteen signature panoramic oval windows, which are among the largest in the business jet category, bathe the interior in natural light and enhance the psychological sense of space and connection to the outside world. Passengers can adjust lighting, window shades, temperature, and entertainment through intuitive touchscreen panels or personal smart devices, as the aircraft’s cabin management system seamlessly integrating modern convenience with luxurious ambience.

A full-service galley—positioned either at the front or rear, based on configuration— features a convection oven, microwave, chiller, and ample storage for gourmet catering. The aircraft also offers two lavatories as standard and, depending on layout, may include a crew rest area for longer transcontinental missions.

Technology (Engine and Avionics)

The revolutionary Gulfstream Symmetry Flight Deck™ represents one of the most significant technological upgrades in recent aviation history with Gulfstream replacing traditional yokes with active-control sidesticks—the first of their kind in a business jet. These sidesticks offer tactile feedback between the pilot and co-pilot, enhancing coordination, improving situational awareness, and ultimately contributing to safety.

The flight deck is augmented by ten high-resolution touchscreen displays, which streamline data presentation and reduce the pilot’s workload. Cutting-edge systems such as Synthetic Vision-Primary Flight Display (SV-PFD), which overlays terrain and runway data in real-time, and the Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS), which allows for precision landings in low-visibility environments without the need for visual cues are among the highlights of the Honeywell Primus Epic-based avionics suite. It marks a major operational advantage for business travellers with tight schedules and weather constraints.

The integration of these technologies not only meets but exceeds current FAA and EASA safety requirements, while also paving the way for future autonomy and advanced airspace integration.

Performance

The Gulfstream G500 is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines, each delivering 15,144 pounds of thrust. This powertrain allows the aircraft to achieve a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.925, positioning it among the fastest business jets in the world. More impressively, it can maintain a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90, and a long-range cruise at Mach 0.85, offering both rapid transits and fuel-efficient operations.

The aircraft has a maximum range of 5,300 nautical miles (9,816 kilometres), allowing nonstop flights between such city pairs as Los Angeles and London, São Paulo and New York, or Dubai and Tokyo. It requires just 5,300 feet (1,615 metres) for take-off and 3,100 feet (945 metres) for landing, which enable access to more than 5,000 airports worldwide, including challenging or remote locations that many other aircraft in its class cannot reach. With a maximum operating altitude of 51,000 feet, it can fly well above commercial air traffic and adverse weather, resulting in smoother and more direct flight paths.

With industry-leading connectivity options, the aircraft supports high-speed Ka-band satellite internet, enabling passengers to conduct video conferences, stream HD content, manage cloud-based tasks, and stay digitally connected throughout the journey. The cabin’s digital ecosystem also includes Gulfstream’s proprietary CabinView™ system, providing flight progress updates and moving maps.

The aircraft is certified for steep approach operations, including at airports such as London City, which have demanding approach profiles and noise restrictions. Its real-world performance meets the demands of a rapidly globalising and mobile clientele.
