Delhi Airport News: Customs Seize Rs 4.03 Crore Gold From Passenger

Delhi Airport News
Customs officers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport seized gold rods weighing 3.2 kg from a passenger arriving from Dubai. The gold is worth about Rs 4.03 crore. An official statement shared the news on Monday, 19 October 2026.
The passenger is an Indian national. He arrived at the airport on 19 October. Customs officers stopped him after noticing certain signs in his behaviour and travel details. This method is known as spot profiling, where officers use their experience to pick out passengers who may be hiding something.
After stopping the passenger, officers carried out a detailed search of his baggage. During the search, they found gold rods hidden inside a floor spring.
A floor spring is a mechanical device fitted beneath the floor, usually near a door. It controls how the door opens and closes and makes sure the door shuts on its own. Because it is a heavy metal fitting, it does not look suspicious at first glance. According to the statement, this is why the device was allegedly used to hide the gold and avoid detection.
A case has been registered under the Customs Act, 1962. This law deals with the import and export of goods and sets rules and penalties for smuggling. Officials said that further investigation is underway. At the time of reporting, no other details were shared about the passenger’s identity, how he planned to carry the gold out of the airport, or whether anyone else was involved.
Gold smuggling is a common problem at airports across India. Smugglers try to avoid paying import duty, which can be high. To do this, they hide gold in unusual places such as luggage fittings, clothing, electronic items, or household objects. Customs officers regularly train and use profiling techniques to catch such attempts.
The seizure of 3.2 kg of gold at Delhi airport shows how alert customs officers are in stopping smuggling. The investigation is still going on, and more details may be shared by officials in the coming days.
