Purandar Airport News

The proposed Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje International Airport at Purandar in Pune is expected to move into the construction stage in December 2026. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the government remains committed to starting construction by December, while land acquisition and other preparatory work are currently underway.

The greenfield airport project is being overseen by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). The agency is preparing to invite tenders for the construction work. According to the state government, the project is progressing according to the planned schedule.

Land acquisition remains one of the most important stages before construction can begin. According to state officials, more than 90% of farmers in Purandar have agreed to the proposed compensation and purchase terms.

The district administration had extended the deadline for landowners to provide their consent until August 16. The extension was intended to give more farmers an opportunity to participate in the land acquisition process.

The government is continuing discussions with landowners while preparing for the next stage of the airport project.

The proposed Purandar airport will require around 1,217 hectares of private land. The land is spread across seven villages in Purandar taluka.

The villages included in the project are Khanwadi, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Pargaon Memane, Vanpuri, Munjewadi and Udachiwadi.

The acquisition of such a large area is a major part of the project, and completing the process will allow the government to move ahead with construction activities.

MADC is preparing to float tenders for the airport project. Once the tender process is completed and other required preparations are in place, construction work is expected to begin in December.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has said that the December construction timeline will be maintained. Preparatory work is expected to continue alongside the land acquisition process.

The proposed airport is expected to become an important part of Pune’s future aviation infrastructure. As air passenger traffic and economic activity increase, additional airport capacity can help meet future demand.

A new international airport at Purandar could also support regional development, improve air connectivity and create opportunities for businesses and surrounding areas.

The project is therefore being closely watched by residents, farmers and the aviation sector.

For now, the focus remains on completing land acquisition, finalising preparations and moving forward with the tender process. If the current schedule remains on track, construction of the Purandar airport is expected to start in December 2026.
