The investigation into the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash has entered its final stage, and the government has said that no fault has been found in the aircraft’s fuel control switch so far. The update was shared by the Ministry of Civil Aviation during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The AI-171 crash took place on June 12, 2026, shortly after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick. The accident claimed the lives of 260 people and became one of India’s worst aviation disasters in recent years. Since then, multiple agencies have been investigating the cause of the crash.
During a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed Parliament that a detailed inspection of the aircraft’s fuel control switch had been completed. The examination was carried out by Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, along with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
According to the government, engineers carefully checked the fuel control switch and its locking mechanism, including the structural strength of its locking detents. The inspection found no abnormality or defect in the component. This means that investigators have not found any evidence that the fuel control switch malfunctioned.
The examination of the fuel control switch was ordered after an Air India pilot reported a possible issue with the same system during a London Heathrow to Bengaluru flight earlier in February 2026. Following that report, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) instructed detailed inspections as part of ongoing aircraft safety checks.
Although the fuel control switch has been cleared during the inspection, the investigation is not yet complete. Officials said that experts are still examining the aircraft’s complete Thrust Control Module at the OEM’s facility in Seattle, USA. This important component controls engine thrust and is now undergoing detailed technical analysis.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the investigation into the AI-171 crash. The government clarified that the final investigation report has not been delayed. Officials explained that major aircraft accident investigations require careful technical analysis and do not follow a fixed timeline.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that investigators are examining all possible causes and contributing factors that may have led to the accident. Every aircraft system, flight data, maintenance record, weather condition, and operational factor is being studied before any final conclusion is reached.
Once the investigation is completed, the AAIB will publish its final report on its official website. The report will include all findings, technical analysis, and recommendations aimed at improving aviation safety and preventing similar accidents in the future.
The latest update provides some clarity by confirming that the fuel control switch has not shown any defects during testing. However, authorities have stressed that the investigation is still ongoing, and no final cause of the AI-171 crash has been determined yet.
