Mumbai International Airport has once again become the center of a major anti-smuggling operation after authorities busted a gold smuggling gang and seized a large quantity of gold worth crores of rupees. The successful operation was carried out by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which intercepted suspects attempting to smuggle gold out of the airport.

According to reports, officials recovered approximately 2.6 kilograms of gold in wax form from two passengers at Mumbai International Airport. The seized gold has an estimated market value of around ₹4.20 crore. The discovery highlights the ongoing challenge faced by customs and intelligence agencies in preventing illegal gold smuggling into India.

The incident occurred when two passengers arrived at the airport and were attempting to leave the premises. Based on specific intelligence inputs and suspicious behavior, authorities decided to stop and inspect them. During the search, officials found the gold concealed in a wax-like form. Smugglers often use such methods to avoid detection by airport security and customs officers.

After the seizure, investigators launched a detailed inquiry into the smuggling network. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals connected to the case. Authorities believe that the smuggling attempt was part of a larger organized network operating across international borders.

Reports suggest that the DRI has identified individuals involved in receiving and concealing the gold after it entered India. Among those arrested are two people who were allegedly responsible for accepting and hiding the smuggled gold. In addition, a jeweler based in Navi Mumbai has also been taken into custody for his suspected involvement in the illegal operation.

Officials are currently investigating how the gold was transported, who financed the smuggling activity, and whether other individuals are linked to the network. The authorities are also examining possible international connections and financial transactions related to the case.

Gold smuggling remains a major concern for Indian authorities. Due to high import duties and strong demand for gold in the country, criminal groups often attempt to bring gold into India through illegal channels. Smugglers use various methods to hide gold, including concealing it in luggage, clothing, electronic devices, and even converting it into unusual forms such as wax-like compounds to avoid detection.

The latest seizure demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-based operations and strict surveillance at airports. Security agencies continue to strengthen monitoring systems and conduct regular checks to prevent illegal activities.

Officials have stated that further investigation is ongoing and more arrests may follow if additional links to the smuggling network are discovered. Authorities are determined to dismantle the entire operation and bring all those involved to justice.

The successful seizure of gold worth ₹4.20 crore at Mumbai International Airport serves as a reminder of the constant efforts being made by law enforcement agencies to combat smuggling and protect the country’s economy from illegal trade activities.
