SWISS Flight News: AAIB Uncovers Details Behind SWISS Aircraft Engine Failure at Delhi Airport

A preliminary investigation report released by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has revealed new details about a serious incident involving a Swiss International Air Lines flight at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport earlier this year.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when SWISS flight LX147 was preparing to depart from New Delhi for Zurich. During the take-off roll, the aircraft experienced a major failure in its left-hand engine, forcing the flight crew to abort take-off immediately.
According to the AAIB report, passengers and airport personnel heard a loud bang coming from the aircraft during the take-off attempt. Witnesses also reported seeing flames emerging from the affected engine. The incident took place at approximately 1:27 a.m. and was later classified by investigators as a “serious incident.”
The flight crew reacted quickly after detecting the engine problem. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots rejected the take-off and brought the aircraft to a safe stop on the runway. Emergency services at the airport responded immediately to the situation.
Reports indicate that smoke was also observed around parts of the aircraft, creating concern among passengers and airport staff. Emergency response teams were deployed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
According to the preliminary findings, six people suffered injuries during the incident. However, no fatalities were reported, and the aircraft was safely secured after the aborted take-off. Airport emergency personnel assisted passengers and crew members following the event.
Investigators examining the aircraft found evidence of extensive internal damage inside the left engine. The report stated that debris was recovered from the affected engine area, indicating a significant mechanical failure. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has also recovered and analyzed data from the aircraft’s flight recorders. These devices, commonly known as the black box, record important flight information and cockpit communications. Investigators are currently studying the recorded data to better understand the sequence of events leading to the engine failure.
The aircraft involved in the incident was operating as SWISS flight LX147, a regularly scheduled international service connecting New Delhi and Zurich. Swiss International Air Lines is the national carrier of Switzerland and operates long-haul flights to several destinations worldwide, including India.
Aviation experts note that engine failures during take-off are rare but are among the most critical situations pilots are trained to handle. Modern commercial aircraft are designed with multiple safety systems that allow pilots to safely reject take-off or continue flight under controlled conditions when necessary.
The AAIB emphasized that the report released so far is only preliminary. A final investigation report will be published after detailed technical analysis, examination of engine components, review of maintenance records, and assessment of flight data recorder information.
The final report is expected to identify the root cause of the engine failure and may include safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Aviation authorities, the airline, aircraft manufacturer, and engine manufacturer are expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
