Air India has announced a major reduction in its domestic flight operations due to rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs. According to sources, the airline may cut up to 22 percent of its domestic flights between June and August 2026 as part of its temporary operational adjustments.

The airline, which operates around 4,400 flights every week, said the decision was taken to manage the financial pressure caused by high aviation fuel prices. Out of the total weekly operations, nearly 3,600 are domestic flights while around 800 are international services.

Air India confirmed in an official statement that it has already reduced some international services and is now making similar adjustments on select domestic routes. The airline described the move as a temporary “rationalisation” of operations aimed at maintaining network stability during difficult market conditions.

According to airline sources, around 20 to 22 percent of domestic services may be affected. While the airline has not yet released the complete list of impacted routes, passengers can expect fewer flight frequencies on certain sectors across the country.

The rising cost of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) has become a major challenge for airlines worldwide. Fuel is one of the largest expenses in airline operations, and any sharp increase in fuel prices directly affects profitability. Airlines are now trying to reduce operational pressure by cutting less profitable routes and adjusting flight schedules.

Apart from fuel prices, the aviation industry has also been facing challenges such as airspace restrictions, supply chain issues, aircraft maintenance delays, and global economic uncertainty. These factors have increased operating expenses for many carriers, including Air India.

Despite the reduction in services, Air India said it will continue monitoring passenger demand and market conditions closely. The airline added that normal operations and flight frequencies could be restored once fuel prices stabilize and the operational environment improves.

To reduce inconvenience for travelers, Air India said passengers affected by cancellations or schedule changes will receive assistance from the airline. The company has promised to provide alternative flight arrangements wherever possible. Passengers will also be eligible for free date changes or full refunds depending on their booking conditions.

Industry experts believe the move could temporarily affect domestic connectivity, especially on routes where Air India plays an important role. Travelers may also see increased ticket prices on some routes due to reduced flight availability during the busy travel season.

The aviation sector in India has been growing rapidly in recent years, with millions of passengers flying daily. However, airlines continue to face financial pressure because of fluctuating fuel prices and intense competition. Air India’s latest decision reflects the broader challenges currently affecting the aviation industry.

Passengers planning domestic travel in the coming months are advised to check flight schedules carefully and stay updated about any changes in bookings. Travel experts also recommend booking tickets early, as reduced flight frequencies may lead to higher demand on available flights.

Air India’s temporary reduction in domestic operations shows how global economic conditions and fuel costs continue to impact airline operations. The airline hopes that these adjustments will help maintain stability while ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency during the challenging period.
