Air India Raises Fuel Surcharge, Flight Tickets to Become Costlier

Air India Raises Fuel Surcharge
Air travel is likely to become more expensive as Air India has increased its fuel surcharge for both domestic and international flights. The new charges will be applicable from April 8, 2026, while some international routes will see changes from April 10.
The airline has taken this step due to a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Fuel is one of the biggest costs for airlines, and the recent increase has forced Air India to adjust its pricing. As a result, passengers may notice higher ticket prices while booking flights.
For domestic flights, Air India has changed its pricing model. Instead of a fixed surcharge, the airline will now charge based on distance. Passengers travelling shorter distances (up to 500 km) will pay a surcharge of ₹299, while those travelling longer distances (above 2,000 km) will pay up to ₹899. This change is aimed at making the charges more balanced according to the distance of travel.
For international flights, the increase is higher. The fuel surcharge will vary depending on the destination. For nearby international routes, the surcharge starts at around $24, while for long-distance routes like North America and Australia, it can go up to $280. Flights to Europe will have a surcharge of around $205.
Although there is some control on domestic fuel price increases, international fuel costs are not regulated in the same way. This is why passengers travelling abroad may see a bigger increase in ticket prices.
With this change, people planning to travel may have to spend more, especially on long-distance and international flights. Air India may also review these charges again in the future depending on fuel price changes.
Overall, the increase in fuel surcharge shows how rising fuel costs are directly affecting air travel prices.
